One of these days I’m gonna have a computer that can render stuff AND do something else at the same time. Goddamn particle systems. Seventy frames at ~three minutes per frame.

There’s no replacement for displacement... right? :-D

Build a cluster with a bunch of Raspberry Pis and run your simulations there. Problem solved.

Sure, just lemme learn how to go program stuff real quick like

Just get a Threadripper 2990WX, 32 cores, 64 threads. Only $2K for the processor.

Have you thought about setting up an AWS account? Our company likes to push compute-intensive tasks to virtual hosted on AWS. I currently have ten VCs set up just to do hydrologic modeling for a couple of contracts. We’ll shut them down when the contracts are up if we don’t have another ready to go.

I don’t do this for money so it makes no sense. I just dabble in 3D modeling and animation as a hobby.

Both AWS and Microsoft Azure have a free tier. They allow a certain number of hours and/ or certain services for no charge.

That won’t happend, if your renderer scales to use all the cores you throw at it. You can however set the process priority for it to low and your pc will be way more useable during rendering!

I can get rid of the slowdowns by switching Blender to render using the GPU but I’m using an oldish laptop so the GPU rendering takes longer.

There’s also a setting to limit the number of threads Cycles is allowed to use but again, I’m working with laptop power so it’s faster to just suf fer through it

I'll have to look into that

Well ofcourse it’s faster to let it abuse the full power of it, leaving nothing for you to waste on things like, gasp, looking at car parts!

That’s actually a good thing bec ause I don’t have car parts money right now
